Produced water treatment, truck miles, and why haul-off is the expensive default

If you work oil and gas produced water treatment, you already know the plot: water comes up with the hydrocarbons, it is rarely a gift, and someone has to do something with it. For a long time the "something" has been a truck and a long drive to a disposal well or saltwater disposal (SWD). That model works until the miles, the rates, and the regulations stop being patient with you.
I am not here to romanticize produced water. It is a complex industrial wastewater — salts, suspended solids, organics, oils, and whatever else the formation decided to share. Operators are not looking for a TED Talk. They are looking for fewer loads, cleaner produced water reuse options, and a treatment story that does not require rebuilding the pad every time the program changes.
Haul-off is simple to explain and expensive to live with. You are paying to move mass that is mostly water. When that water can be treated and reused — for example hydraulic fracturing water reuse where the program and the chemistry allow — you are no longer paying full freight for every barrel that leaves the site. The savings are not theoretical accounting. They show up in truck counts, disposal tickets, and the risk of depending on a single disposal pathway.
Where does CAST fit? We are water pretreatment. We tee into the stream; we do not ask you to scrap the rest of the train. Capillary Action Separation Technology is aimed at the load that makes downstream steps work too hard — fine suspended solids (TSS) and related constituents of concern — so membranes, ion exchange, GAC, or whatever you already trust can do their job on a cleaner feed. In the right application, that path supports high recovery of water that can be reused rather than hauled. We talk about recovery in the high nineties when the matrix and the train support it — including targets people shorthand as "99%" — but I will say the same thing I say on municipal water treatment and industrial jobs: site-specific, proven on your water in a paid pilot, not a brochure guarantee.
Produced water reuse for fracking is attractive when the operator controls the demand and the quality window. Pretreatment that shrinks solids and membrane fouling load can be the difference between "we tried reuse once" and "reuse is part of how we run the program." CAST is modular (scale by adding units in parallel; a module is in the 20–200 GPM conversation, not a hard ceiling for the field), has no additional power requirements for the separation step, and can be bypassed during a pilot so the site is never stuck. Patent pending. Small footprint. Physics first — no chemicals or membranes inside CAST itself; you keep the media and processes you already prefer downstream.
Commercially we still walk the same path: intake, scoping call, one-page ROI, paid pilot. After we prove value, water-as-a-service means we share documented savings — and for produced water, haul-off reduction is often the loudest line item on that page. If your produced water story is mostly diesel and distance, it is worth asking whether a tee-in pretreatment step could turn barrels of haul-off into barrels of reuse. Bring your water data if you have it. If you do not, we will help you plan the sampling. I would rather argue with real numbers than with hope.
